Altec Line Array

Would it be possible to build a speaker box for a line array using Altec components ?
2 Altec 12" with 4 Altec 8" and Line Array High Frequency Driver .

GPA has one or two 12" models. As for the 8"
I don't think they are manufactured .As for the line aeeay high frequency driver there should be no problem. Designing the cabinet
would be a challenge.

I would put the HF horn in the center with two 8"drivers above and two below. Finish it off with a 12" on top and one on the bottom. Keep them inline vertically and as close together as possible.
Altec made sone columns with 755s or 403s ( or was it 408s ) .

Thanks for the info. What I was thinking of designing a Line array than column speakers.

Such as this photo with 15" 8" 8" HF HF HF 8" 8" 15".

My friend Dr. John K. Hilliard designed a line array for Altec in the late 1960's. They worked fairly well, considering that line arrays don't work very well.

One of the finest thinkers in this area is Barry McKinnon. He has an EXCELLENT series of articles on all kinds of audio-related topics, including cluster design and line arrays.

Mr Hilliard did write a paper on the subject in 1970 .It works well for 15" drivers but his calculations were limited to motion picture reproduction.

Some one came with the idea of a horizontal array.
Describing the directivity as the same as that for a single driver.

Why wait until year 2000 to mass produce this system?

True you need a computer to curve the line to cover the field properly.

I found the answer . L'acoustic came up with the product in 1993 after 7 years of research.

JBL put the emphasis on quality drivers to compensate for their late arrival.

It was a market oriented product for l'acoustic.
No point in designing a new sytem if there are no buyers .

So which one is the best . Hard to tell . You need
all 18 boxes flown to test the system.

I guess they are both equally good .

Line arrays are here to stay. The taming of this system has been done.

My brother attended the Neil Young 2008 fall tour concert. And he knows what the 604 8G sounds like. THe sound was incredible.






The front loaded mid bass horns will be practically usefull only for permanent installations such as stadiums and theaters including large cinemas 70' by 40' foot screen.

18 drivers in one box 48"X30"x23". Vs 10 drivers. Interresting concept . Unfortunately there's
not enough information on the product. Danley is renowned for it's sub woofer.A good company.
